1 Why HUCM?

Founded in 1958, Henan University of Chinese Medicine (HUCM) is located in Zhengzhou, the capital city of Henan province. It is one of the earliest established TCM universities in China, and the only TCM higher institution in Henan province which was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council to confer Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees. It is one of the five TCM universities co-sponsored by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and provincial government. In the past 60 years, it has developed from a TCM college into a general university with over 19,000 students, providing undergraduate and postgraduate (Master’s and Doctorate) programs, international education and continuing education programs in medicine, engineering, science, management and arts. The university has established cooperative relationships with over 50 educational research and medical institutions worldwide.

It has four campuses, covering an area of 1594.94 mu (roughly 163hectares), consisting of 17schools (departments or centers), providing 24Bachelor’s, 57 Master’s and 18 Doctoral programs inclusive of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, Acupuncture-Moxibustion and Tuina, Chinese Orthopedics, Nursing, Herbology and Preventive Medicine. Among these 35 are listed as key discipline of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Under it there are 3 provincial level affiliated hospitals, 129 clinical teaching bases, and 59 research institutes.

Henan Province, where HUCM is located, is the major root of Chinese medicine and birthplace of ZHANG Zhongjing. Great works of TCM such as the Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine, the Treatise on Febrile and Miscellaneous Diseases, and the Shennong Herbal Encyclopedia were completed in Henan. Henan abounds in over 2780 kinds of Chinese herbs and takes the third place in terms of variety and quantity. Henan is also the place where Chen’s Taichi originated.
